Managing and Using Social Media Effectively in the Workplace

April 12, 2011 9:00am-Noon

Trustee's Room (11th Floor Tower Building), Massachusetts College of Art and Design

Presented by: Ryan Higginson, HRIS Manager, Suffolk University

This session will indulge all levels of interest: reviewing some of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of social media in the workplace. Walking the fine line between ultimate multi-tasking and complete distraction, today's workers have a new style of informality that can either be harnessed for good, or cause more difficulty than some managers are willing to accept. Learn how to maximize the strengths of social media for you and members of your staff.

About the Speaker: Ryan Higginson is the Associate Director/HRIS Manager in the Human Resources Office at Suffolk University. He has worked in higher education for the past 11 years. Previously consulting in several different industries employing strategy in technology and new media, Ryan currently hosts social media trainings with non-profit workforce development organizations in Boston. He will be presenting on social recruiting at the 2011 PodCamp Boston. Aside from serving on several advisory boards and committees, Ryan keeps an occasional blog on personal branding and social media on his site: ryanhigginson.com

Teaching and Learning Collaborative,(TLC)

The Colleges of the Fenway’s Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC), supports and builds on faculty development programs offered by the individual colleges of the six-college consortium and develops new, effective, and innovative opportunities for collaborative faculty development for them.  The goals of the TLC are to: 1) enhance faculty teaching through shared professional development experiences; 2) share expertise to strengthen programs on individual campuses; 3) facilitate support networks across and within institutions; and 4) increase collaborative academic programs and research.

While the content focus of specific initiatives and events varies, all TLC offerings are developed and delivered collaboratively; emphasize the relationship between learning, teaching and scholarship/creative production; result in the implementation of action plans; and encourage small communities of practice and research in areas of faculty interest.  Annual events of the TLC include the Summer Teaching Institute, the Fall New Faculty Reception, the Annual Teaching and Learning Conference, and the Spring Faculty Reception.  A four-course certificate program for Teaching College Effectively with Technology was initiated in summer, 2011.

The grant that funds the TLC was received from the Davis Educatitonal Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis's retirement as chairman of Shaw's Supermarket, Inc.
